Friendly match with Essex Mens Captains Society

Our first friendly match of the 2019 season was played alongside the Essex Mens Captains Society, held at Woodford Golf Club on 4th April.  It is always our first game of the season and is much enjoyed by everyone.

The format played was a team of 4 (2 men, 2 ladies) with the better ball score for each pair added together.

First place went to Pat Flynn (Rayleigh), Georgina Penketh (Crondon Park), Kevin Smith (Braintree) & Bryan Powell (Colne Valley) with a score of 76 points. In second place were Jennie Luke (Mardyke Valley), Christine Wilkins (Warley Park), Paul Cooper(Chelmsford) and Roger Mills (Burnham-on-Crouch) with a score of 74 points

Woodford is a tricky parkland course and was in very good condition for this time of year.  The greens were excellent to putt on.

Compliments went to the Chef, as the evening meal was superb

I’d like to thank everyone for playing, with a big thankyou to the 3 reserve players who filled in at short notice.

The Friendly games are always played in the true spirit of the game. I need a few more ladies to play against Hertfordshire at Letchworth Golf Club on 27thJune 2019.  If you would like to be considered for the team please contact me.

Committee Vacancies – can you help

We are pleased to say that we have received a nomination for the post of Hon Treasurer, however we are still looking for someone, preferably from a club not already represented on the Committee to take on the role of Merchandiser.  This role involves, recording sales at meetings etc, banking monies and holding a small amount of stock.

An extension to the 1 April nomination deadline has been agreed.  If you feel you could support the Society by taking on this role please contact either Dot Greaves or me.

Sad News

It is with much sadness that I report the death of Phyllis Stilwell, a Vice President of the Society and former Hon President of Maylands Golf Club.  As her dementia progressed she had been moved to a Nursing Home in Somerset, to be closer to her Niece. Phyllis passed away on 22 December aged 92 following a fall earlier in the week.

Phyllis had been a member of the Society for well over 50 years, attending her first meeting in 1965 at Chigwell Golf Club. She served on the Society Committee in a variety of capacities including the Ida Bunting Organiser & Referee for many years.

I understand that her funeral will take place local to Maylands Golf Club. Details will be posted on our website when available.

A truly lovely lady who will be missed.

Today (21 January 2019) we said a fond farewell to Phyllis, celebrating the many aspects of her life not least the many hours she devoted to her passion for golf.

Rest in peace Phyllis
