Our next Meeting is our 1st Summer Meeting which takes place on Tuesday 20 June at Burnham Golf Club. We are honoured to have this fixture during Burnham Golf Clubs Centenary week, which means everything will be in tip top condition. The extensive views over the river Crouch are also one of the highlights of playing this fabulous course.

If you are not booked in already or you know another past or present Lady Captain who would like to play in this event, please contact Jane Collier – Meetings Organiser to book your place. Email: janecollier03@btinternet.com

Final details for this event will be published in June.

AGM & Spring Meeting The Warren May 2023 – Results

The AGM & Spring Meeting took place on 9 May at The Warren Golf Club with around 50 ladies attending. Carol Bell,  new President, presented Dot Greaves , outgoing President, with a lovely bouquet of flowers and voucher on behalf of all the members for her services to the Society in numerous Committee roles over many years.

In her Presidents Inaugural Speech, Carol said that it was an honour and privilege to be invited to be President of the Society which was founded in 1954 by Ida Bunting of Thorpe Hall.  She said that there had been a lot of changes over the years and she was hopeful that there would be more improvements over the next few years to better meet the needs of the Society members. Carol also stressed that the days were not just about playing in the competition, they also provided an important opportunity for members to meet, network and sometimes make lasting friendships with other past and present Lady Captains.

Following the short AGM, 46 ladies teed off at noon in the 4BBB competition. The Warren Golf Course was looking splendid despite heavy overnight rain. It was overcast when the ladies teed off and the weather forecast predicted rain and thunder storms for most of the afternoon. Surprisingly the sun broke through and the temperature rose. But as the afternoon progressed the clouds reformed and rain started to fall.  Thankfully the full brunt of the thunderstorm didn’t appear until the ladies were safely in the clubhouse enjoying a delicious dinner.

Carol Bell and Jackie Collins (LC The Warren Golf Club) presented the prizes which were hotly contested. Prizes were awarded as follows:

1st & winners of the Iris Stranks Salver

Kim Sparks – Warley Park & Ros Clements – Stoke by Nayland  38pts

2nd Louise Daniels – Boyce Hill & Jackie Collins-The Warren 37pts on c/b

3rd  Georgina Penketh – Crondon Park & Carol Yore-Forrester Park 37pts on c/b

Best Front 9 Barbara Church – Burnham & Jane Collier – Forrester Park 19pt on c/b

Best Back 9 Celia Jackaman The Rayleigh Club & Val Cook-Benton Hall     19

Sadly, after the prize giving we realised that one pair Elaine Beattie Ballards Gore & Mary Graham Benton Hall who also had 37 points, should have been awarded the second prize. Our sincere apologies to these ladies who have now been sent their prize voucher in the post.

Grateful thanks to The Warren Golf Club for hosting our event, to all the staff on the day for making us so welcome and the delicious meal. Thanks too to Jackie Collins for joining us on the day and her band of ladies in strategic places on the golf course helping the ladies get round.

Embroidered Badges

INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING IRON ON EMBROIDERED BADGE

(This is also downloadable from the Merchandising page)

  1. Place badge in chosen position. Pin at corners if worried it will move.
  1. Cover with a piece of light cloth – a cotton handkerchief or pillow case for example – to protect your garment.
  1. Using a steam iron preheated to the wool setting (or your minimum setting to generate steam) press for 5 – 10 seconds with steam at the corners. Check you are happy with position. Remove pins if used.
  1. Reposition cloth over badge and press entire badge with steam for 10 – 20 seconds.
  1. Check that badge has adhered properly, particularly at the corners. If unsure repeat the process, pressing for further 10 – 20 seconds. Some base fabrics may need a second steaming to make sure all the glue has merged with the garment.
  1. Leave garment undisturbed for 10 – 15 minutes afterwards to ensure badge does not move out of position.

TIPS: If applying the badge to a sleeve place a rolled up towel or equivalent inside the sleeve.

NB. For sewing the badge instead, the glue needs to be removed. Using the steam iron and some unwanted cloth on the wrong side of the badge, press for a few seconds then tear the cloth away. Repeat over and over again until all the glue has disintegrated and the last bits can be picked off! Kitchen roll will not do for this.

Autumn Meeting 6 September 2022 – South Essex – Results

Our Autumn Meeting was the final event of the season for the Society of Essex Lady Captains. Due to numerous cancellations in the run up only 38 ladies played on the day. The weather was generally fine though there was a heavy shower towards the end of the competition. Many of our ladies had not played at South Essex before and it was in good condition despite the recent dry weather. Some found the bunkers challenging with lots of new sand after recent downpours. Thanks to South Essex for hosting our event, the staff on the day were very welcoming and food was great. Thanks also to Lady Captain Liz Reid for joining us on the day, playing in the competition to make up the numbers and helping Lady President Dot Greaves present the prizes at the end of the day. The finalists of the 2022 Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy were also present to receive their trophies in front of all the ladies.
