Sad News

It is with much sadness that I report the death of Phyllis Stilwell, a Vice President of the Society and former Hon President of Maylands Golf Club.  As her dementia progressed she had been moved to a Nursing Home in Somerset, to be closer to her Niece. Phyllis passed away on 22 December aged 92 following a fall earlier in the week.

Phyllis had been a member of the Society for well over 50 years, attending her first meeting in 1965 at Chigwell Golf Club. She served on the Society Committee in a variety of capacities including the Ida Bunting Organiser & Referee for many years.

I understand that her funeral will take place local to Maylands Golf Club. Details will be posted on our website when available.

A truly lovely lady who will be missed.

Autumn Meeting Benton Hall September 2018 – Results

Our last competition of the season, the Autumn Meeting, took place at Benton Hall Golf Club with 56 members of the Society playing on the day. It was hot and sunny, though there was some wind to contend with. The course at Benton Hall looked stunning and the greens were in brilliant condition. With the dry conditions the ball was rolling and in total 10 pairs in the 4BBB competition, off full handicap, finished with 40 points or more on the challenging championship course. Our thanks to Benton Hall for hosting this event and to all the staff on the day. Thanks also to Hilary Adams host Lady Captain for her help with preparations and on the day, her large band of past Lady Captains on the course helping the competitors to get round in good time and Sue Ward Competition Secretary for taking charge of the results, no easy task where the majority of the prizes are decided on count back.

Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy 2018 Final

The final of the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy for 2018 took place at Colchester Golf Club between Lee Stavri (West Essex) and Carole Robinson (Gosfield Lake).  Carole received 9 shots. The ladies teed off at 1pm on a warm, dry day. Lee got off to a good start and was 2 up after 2 holes. Carole then got going and gradually clawed  back and they were all square  after 7 holes. A series of 4 halved holes followed. Lee gained the lead at the par 5 11th but Carole fought back at the par 5 12th for the match to go back to all square. Lee then won the par 3 13th and the par 4 14th to stand 2up. The par 5 15th was halved meaning Lee was 2up with 3 to play. Next came the par 3 16th which Lee managed to win to close out the match 3 & 2. Both players hit some great shots during the match but both struggled to get the measure of the greens at times. The match was played in the true spirit of golf and was watched by members of the Society’s Committee and supporters from Gosfield.  Thanks to Colchester Golf Club for hosting the final and looking after us so well. Thanks also to Lynne Kirkham who stood in to Referee the match at short notice.  Jan Collier (President of the Society) presented the runner up and winners prizes and mementos and the Ida bunting Memorial Trophy to Lee. On behalf of herself and Carole, Lee thanked the Committee for running such a great and well organised competition which they had both really enjoyed playing in.

Well done to everyone who played in the competition this year.  A letter/entry form for 2019 has already been emailed to Lady Captains and can be downloaded from our Ida Bunting Page.

3rd Summer Meeting The Rayleigh Club August 2018 – Results

The penultimate event of the season took place at The Rayleigh Club in early August. After all the recent hot and sunny weather it was disappointing to have much cooler temperatures, grey skies and drizzly rain on the morning. The forecast for the day was poor and with the ladies teeing off from 12 noon the rain got worse as the day went on. After all the organisation it is always disappointing when the weather tries to thwart the proceedings. Whilst a lot of the ladies came in drenched after 9 holes, others soldiered on in difficult conditions and should be commended for their fortitude. Consequently the scores reflected the poor weather conditions on the day.

In 4th place with 31 points ocb were Tricia Ainsbury (Burstead) & Jeanette Oakes (Romford), 3rd also on 31 points were Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Carol Bell (Benton Hall). 2nd ocb with 33points were Sandra Griggs (Maylands) and Monique Praill (West Essex). In 1st place and winners of the Friendship Salver also on 33points were Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) & Pat Drew (The Burstead). The day finished with a delicious carvery meal which was much appreciated and enjoyed by the ladies. Thanks to The Rayleigh Club for hosting the event and to Joanna Kurn (Lady Captain The Rayleigh Club) and Pat Flynn for their help with preparations and on the day.  Despite the weather a good day was had by all.
