3rd Summer Meeting Colchester August 2019 – Results

The fourth meeting of the season took place at Colchester Golf Club in August.   The course was in great condition especially the greens. Over 50 ladies played on the day in warm sunshine. Some of the ladies found the course tricky in parts and some found the warm temperatures a little too much. Nevertheless, the prizes were fiercely contested with four pairs all finishing with 40 points. In 4th place were Barbara Ingram (West Essex) & Mary Graham (Benton Hall). 3rd place went to Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) & Judy Podd (Forrester Park). In 2nd place were Joanna Hurn (The Rayleigh Club) & Christine Hunt (West Essex).  The overall winners of the day picking up the Friendship Salver were Pam Stevens (Gosfield) & Chris Gordon (Orsett).

Our grateful thanks to Colchester Golf Club for hosting this event, to all the staff on the day who were really helpful, to Pat Kettle who stood in for the Colchester Lady Captain, and to both Pat and Sheila Dornan who checked all the cards and computed the results.  A really lovely day.

Friendly Match v Suffolk Lady Captains

Our final friendly match of the 2019 season was held at Ufford Park Golf Club on the 2nd August 2019 hosted by the Suffolk Lady Captains.

Ufford Park is quite a challenging 18-hole resort course, with plenty of carries over water making your tee shot quite daunting at times.  The course and the greens were in very good condition.

Unfortunately, due to 2 late withdrawals, we were unable to field a full team.  We had already used 4 or 5 reserves to fill the team so despite contacting some 50+ players the day prior to the match we had to go shorthanded. It was agreed that we would play a joint team event with two 3-ball teams and four 4-ball teams with the best 2 scores to count.    Winners on the day were Georgina Penketh (Crondon Park) & Barbara Connolly (Benton Hall) alongside their Suffolk partners with 81 points.  In second place were Sandra Goff (Crondon Park) & Sheila Mines (Benton Hall) plus partners with 73 points.

Thanks to the Catering Staff for an excellent meal and to the Green Staff. Thanks also to everyone for playing, with a special thanks to the reserves who stepped in.

It’s been a great season on the friendly front, despite the difficulties associated with numerous last minute cancellations and trying to field a full team for every event. We do understand that sometimes it is necessary to cancel at the last minute but this can leave the Committee in a very difficult position in order to field a full team at very short notice.  A very big thank you to all those who played this year, especially the ladies who stood in at the last minute.  Look out for the 2020 Friendly Match fixtures on the website later in the year and apply for suitable dates, at February renewals, as we need more ladies to apply in order to ensure we can field a full team for every event.

Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy 2019 – Semi finals

The semi-finals took place at Orsett Golf Club on Monday 5th August. There was some early rain which fortunately stopped prior to the first tee time at 10am.

The first match saw Julia Brett of West Essex handicap 12 take on Sue Knowles a 15 handicapper from Thorpe Hall. The first 11 holes were hotly contested with six halves and both players having the lead at one time or another.  Sue led by one hole and at the pivotal 12th when Julia bunkered her tee shot the lead was doubled.  Holes 13 and 14 both went to Sue and what had been a tight match was suddenly over 4 and 3.

The second match saw Pat Flynn, handicap 18, The Rayleigh Club take on Sharon Warrington, handicap 17, Three Rivers. Sharon was 2up after 3 holes, Pat won the 5th but Sharon then played well to win the match on the 13th hole 6&5.

My thanks to Lynne Kirkham for giving up her time to referee and to Orsett Golf Club for hosting the semi-final.

The final between Sue Knowles & Sharon Warrington will take place at The Rayleigh Club on Monday 19th August, tee time 10.16. Supporters are very welcome.

The losing semi-finalists Julia & Pat received a memento of their good run in the competition which was presented by our past Lady President, Jan Collier.
