Covid – 19 Update August 2020

After careful consideration and in the knowledge that the brakes have been put on easing the lockdown further, the Committee have decided with the agreement of Three Rivers Golf & Country Club to cancel our last meeting of the season on 8 September.

It is a real shame that we can’t get together at all this year and whilst playing golf is relatively safe, doing anything in big groups increases the risk significantly. I know that some of you will be disappointed but at the end of the day the health & safety of our members is paramount.

If any current Lady Captains need to purchase a Society of Lady Captains badge and/or bag tag together with 2021 membership for their Vice Captain please contact Dot Greaves ASAP, so that early collection can be arranged. A form can be downloaded from our FAQ page.

Subscription forms, Notice of AGM 2021 and other documents will be sent towards the end of January. A list of dates for 2021 will be posted here shortly so don’t forget to check back soon.

Message from our President

2020 has been a sad year for us personally and for the Society.  I found the lockdown very difficult.
Not knowing how long the pandemic would effect our bookings, we  decided month by month whether we could go ahead with a meeting. In the end we did not manage to meet up as we felt it was too much of a risk and we did not want to change our format in doing a draw and not allowing members from the same club to play together.  Hopefully next year we will have a full calendar.

We did not bank the membership cheques this year as Covid took over, so in January 2021 our mail shot will include all 2019 members, any new members for 2020 and new Lady Captains.  I hope all the clubs will enter the Ida Bunting Knockout and make up for the lost year.

I hope you are all able to play golf at your clubs.  I think the golf course is the safest place to be and find the golfers very good at social distancing.

Stay safe and well

Best wishes
Dot Greaves

During the current unprecedented times it is difficult to assess the longer term effects the pandemic will have. Some organisations may not survive, the Society has been running since 1954 and we currently have a healthy membership base. Doubtless some members may not return to the fold, so encouraging other Past Lady Captains at your club to join our ranks in 2021 is really important at this time.

Looking forward to catching up with you all in 2021

Stay safe

Covid-19 Coronavirus – Update 18 July 2020

As we begin to return to some sort of normality both on and off the golf course the Committee have been considering whether it would be feasible to hold our 3rd Summer Meeting at Clacton in August. Although it would be lovely to get some of our members together for a meeting in August we also need to take account of the duty of care we have for our members. On balance and with the agreement of Clacton Golf Club we have decided to reschedule the meeting for August 2021.

A decision has yet to be made about our Autumn Meeting at Three Rivers in September.  So please watch this space for further information.

Some good news regarding your 2020 membership subscriptions. The Committee have decided to waive all subscriptions for 2020.  All subscription cheques (£6 or £3] have been destroyed and all those who applied for membership will be treated as 2020 members for Ida Bunting purposes (Ida Bunting entry form & rules are now on the Ida Bunting page).

I hope that many of you have now been able to play some competitive golf at your own clubs and perhaps enjoy visiting some other clubs in smaller numbers.

Take care and stay safe.

Covid-19 Coronavirus – Update 28 May 2020

With the easing of the lockdown in mid May allowing golf courses to open (whilst following social distancing requirements) we hope that many of you have been able to get back onto the fairways.
Further to the review of our fixtures by the Committee at the end of April, it has now been decided to CANCEL our 2nd Summer Meeting at Theydon Bois on 13 July. Going forward a further review of the situation will take place around the end of June.
Enjoy your golf if you can, stay safe & well, oh and of course STAY ALERT especially whilst on the golf course!

Covid-19 Coronavirus – Update 27 April

The Committee has reviewed the situation regarding the Society’s fixtures and has decided to cancel our 2 home fixtures in early June and in agreement with Hertfordshire Lady Captains to cancel our away fixture towards the end of June. The details of the cancelled events are:

1st Summer Meeting at Ballards Gore June 3rd

Friendly Match v Herts at Colne Valley June 8th

Friendly Match v Kent at West Malling June 22nd

Please pass this information on to others at your club if you are able.

We will review the situation regarding other events towards the end of May and will post another update on the website. It looks like it may be sometime before our combined golfing and social activities can resume, although we may be able to return to playing the game we all love, at our own clubs, as long as social distancing can be observed.

We hope that you are all well and keeping yourselves busy through these difficult and unprecedented times.

Stay safe

Covid-19 Coronavirus

In line with Government guidelines issued this week and following the lead by the Essex Ladies County Golf Association, the Committee of the Society of Lady Captains of Essex has decided to cancel the Ida Bunting competition knock out rounds for 2020.

The Spring Meeting at Braintree on May 6th and the Friendly match with Essex Mens Captains at Stock Brook have also been cancelled. The Committee hopes to be able to reschedule the AGM to a later date and decisions on all other events will be taken in the ensuing weeks as advice is published by Public Health England.

Please pass this information on to other Society members at your club. Further updates will be posted here in due course.  Rest assured that the health and safety of our members is paramount.

Autumn Meeting Chigwell September 2019 – Results

Our Autumn Meeting, the last event of the season took place at Chigwell Golf Club in mid September. A very popular meeting with the past and present Lady Captains with 78 ladies from 36 clubs across the County playing on the day in the drawn 4BBB competition.

The ladies teed off from 12 noon in warm and overcast conditions. As the day went on the grey clouds gathered, the wind got up and eventually the rain came down. Nevertheless the ladies enjoyed the course although some found the greens tricky to master and the numerous bunkers difficult to avoid. At the end of the day the ladies were treated to a delicious cold buffet. Our thanks to Chigwell Golf Club for hosting the event and to all the staff on the day for looking after our every need. Thanks also to Kate Gadsby Lady Captain of Chigwell for joining us for the day and to Jo Davies our Vice President for coming in the afternoon to take charge of the results and present the prizes with Kate.

As is often the case, the prizes were fiercely contested with 4 pairs on 39 points. 6th Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Jenny Luke (Mardyke Valley), 5th Sandra Griggs (Maylands) & Christine Berry (Belfairs), 4th June Morgan (Langdon Hills) & Roma Raymond (Five Lakes) 3rd Brenda Young (Braintree) & Pat Vincent (Chelmsford).  However 2 pairs excelled and in second place with 41 points were Pauline Nash (Royal Epping) & Margaret Oliver (Orsett).  But the clear winners lifting the Bradban Trophy with a fantastic score of 45 points were Lynne Southgate (The Burstead) and Carol Berry (Garon Park).

It was great to see so many ladies in there pink attire out on the course, a great way to end the season.

We are in the process of finalising our programme of events for 2020, details should be on our website before Christmas and we look forward to seeing our existing members and some new ones too next season.

3rd Summer Meeting Colchester August 2019 – Results

The fourth meeting of the season took place at Colchester Golf Club in August.   The course was in great condition especially the greens. Over 50 ladies played on the day in warm sunshine. Some of the ladies found the course tricky in parts and some found the warm temperatures a little too much. Nevertheless, the prizes were fiercely contested with four pairs all finishing with 40 points. In 4th place were Barbara Ingram (West Essex) & Mary Graham (Benton Hall). 3rd place went to Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) & Judy Podd (Forrester Park). In 2nd place were Joanna Hurn (The Rayleigh Club) & Christine Hunt (West Essex).  The overall winners of the day picking up the Friendship Salver were Pam Stevens (Gosfield) & Chris Gordon (Orsett).

Our grateful thanks to Colchester Golf Club for hosting this event, to all the staff on the day who were really helpful, to Pat Kettle who stood in for the Colchester Lady Captain, and to both Pat and Sheila Dornan who checked all the cards and computed the results.  A really lovely day.
