AGM & Autumn Meeting Romford September 2021 – Results

The 66th AGM of the Society eventually took place in early September, having not been possible in 2020 or May 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions.  A little over 40 members of the Society attended.  There were a number of apologies not least of which was our own Lady President Dot Greaves who was having to isolate.  The AGM was as usual an informative but brisk affair which included a presentation to the winner of the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy Carol Penny The Rayleigh Club and the runner up Linda Woods Royal Epping.

At the end of the meeting a lovely thank you was given by Susan Wilson Forrester Park, on behalf of all members, to the Committee for their hard work especially during these difficult times. This was also echoed by Carole Loveday Romford Golf Club.

The Lady Captain of Romford Golf Club Steph Withers then welcomed all the ladies to Romford and hoped they would enjoy their day. The Autumn Meeting took place shortly afterwards with 38 ladies in the 4BBB competition off full handicap, with the Lady Captain of Romford marking a card for the odd pair.

The course was in superb condition though some of the ladies found the rough punishing and had difficulty with some of the carries off the tee. But all enjoyed their golf in warm and sunny conditions. The day was finished off with a very enjoyable fish and chip and Eton mess supper.  Carol Bell thanked Steph for all her help and the assistance of Romford ladies and a gentleman in ball spotting as balls were difficult at times  to locate in the rough. Carol  presented Steph with an orchid as a token appreciation. Our grateful thanks also go to Romford Golf Club for hosting the meeting and to all the staff on the day. The catering and service staff deserve a special mention as they were exemplary and the ladies really appreciated it.

The competition was very competitive with all pairs on 30 points or more.  In third place on count back with 40 points were Cecelia Jackaman The Rayleigh Club & Viggi Thompson Forrester Park. 2nd also on 40 points were Linda Woods Royal Epping & Terri Hayzer Warley Park. Way out ahead with a fantastic score of 46 points and winners of the Bradban Trophy were

Pennie Lipscomb The Warren and Mary Hull Burnham

Vouchers for all the prize winners have been posted.

Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy Final 2021

The final of the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy took place at The Warren Golf Club on Monday 23rd August.

Carol Penny handicap index 14.1, The Rayleigh Club v Linda Woods handicap index 16, Royal Epping Golf Club.  Linda received 2 shots.

Carol won the tricky first hole but Linda then won the second hole to square the match. The third & fourth holes were halved. Carol had an excellent drive on the 101yds par 3 5th and won the hole with a par. Linda then won the 6th with her shot & continued her good play to win the 7th & 8th. The 9th was halved so Linda turned 2up.

Carol then won the 173yd Par 3 10th reducing the deficit to 1. The 11th was halved  but Linda won the 12th to go back to 2 up. Carol then fought back strongly winning the 13th, parring the 14th to square the match and winning the 15th to go 1 up. Linda won the tough par 5 16th to get the match back to square. The tricky 107yd par 3 was halved in 4 leaving it all to play for on the 462 yd par 5 18th. Both players hit good drives but Linda’s ball held up in the rough and her second shot left her with no clear shot to the green. Meanwhile Carol’s drive sat centre fairway and after a good second shot she put her third just short of the green. Carol went on to chip and putt for a par to win the match. It was a tight match and fitting for the final.

Lady President Dot Greaves presented both players with mementos and Carol Penny with the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy. Thanks to The Warren Golf Club for hosting the final.

Ida Bunting Semi finals – Results

Ida Bunting Semi Finals Monday 9th August 2021 Five Lakes Golf Club
We were favoured by the course being in excellent condition and just one short, heavy shower followed by brilliant sunshine.
Match 1 teed off at 10.40am
Jennifer Starr playing handicap 18 from Gosfield v Linda Woods playing handicap 18 from Royal Epping
The first 2 holes were halved, Jenny then putted very well to go 3 up after 8 holes. Linda then played well and won the next 4 holes to go 1 up; Jenny won the 14th to square the match but Linda won the 15th &16th and went on to win on the 17th 2&1.
Match 2 teed off at 10.48am
Andrea Clarke playing handicap 19 from Belfairs v Carol Penny playing handicap 17 from The Rayleigh Club
Andrea started with a par on the first hole to go 1 up, Carol won the 4th but lost the 5th. This match was very close with the lead swapping sides repeatedly and was all square at the turn. Andrea won the 10th but Carol fought back winning 11 & 12. Andrea then squared the match on the 13th but lost the 15th so Carol was 1 up going down the 18th which was halved so Carol won 1 up.
The losing semi-finalists were presented with a small token as congratulations for getting so far in the competition.
Our thanks go to the caddies, referees and Five Lakes Golf Club.

Clacton 3rd Summer Meeting August 2021 – Results

Our 3rd Summer meeting took place at Clacton Golf Club in mid August. It was a small but very successful meeting with 32 ladies playing the challenging coastal course. Whilst the course is flat there are plenty of bunkers and fleets to avoid and the rough proved tricky to get out of at times.  A massive swarm of flying ants caused problems for some players on the 16th. The bar and catering staff were very efficient and friendly and the ladies enjoyed their evening meal. Thanks especially to Jane Harkness and Terry McConnell for their help in arranging the event and to Head Professional  Michael Goodwin  for sorting out the golf side of things & welcoming us all to the club on the day.  Lady Captain Maxine Baker joined the ladies for their evening meal.

Whilst the weather forecast was warm but overcast there was a breeze and we did get a shower but the sun came out to finish off a lovely day at the seaside!

The 4BBB drawn pairs were very competitive with all 3 prizewinning pairs finishing on 38 points. The prize winners sheet can be downloaded below.  The winners of the Friendship Salver on count back were Terry Whiteman Garon Park & Jenny Luke Mardyke Valley. Vouchers for the 3 winning pairs will be posted shortly.

Theydon Bois 2nd Summer Meeting July 2021 – Results

Our 2nd Summer Meeting took place at Theydon Bois Golf Club in mid July. With a forecast of heavy rain and possible lightening sadly a number of ladies decided to cancel. This always causes a lot of extra work especially on this occasion as it was a drawn team game. However Lady Captain Jill James and past LC’s Jo Shepherd and Jennifer Stokes all stepped up to the plate and joined in the competition to make up the teams. The drawn teams played a stableford competition with 2 out of 4 scores to count. The course looked lovely but with little roll on the ball after recent rain it was generally playing long. Congratulations to the winners Mary-Anne Decruz (Benton Hall), Judith Robertson (Colchester), Ros Clements Stoke by Nayland and Susan Gill (Maylands). We will try to present the Trophy later in the year. The full list of prize winners can be downloaded here.

As is often the case the weather forecast didn’t turn out to be a reality and whilst is started out cloudy, the skies soon cleared away and temperature rose to create some lovely playing conditions. Just to show how great the conditions were for most of the day take a look at Linda Mead current Lady Captain of Mardyke Valley enjoying her first meeting with us in glorious sunshine. Duing these Covid times the Committee are having to put in place revised processes & procedures to ensure everyone is safe. These have worked really well and a number of our members have praised the excellent organisation of our days which does make our efforts worthwhile. Our grateful thanks to Theydon Bois Golf Club for hosting this event and to all the staff on the day. The meal of braised lamb shanks and tarte tatin was a real delight and praised by many of the ladies. Thanks again to Lady Captain Jill and Past Captains Jo and Jennifer for their help on the day.

Our next meeting is on 12 August at Clacton, if any past or present Lady Captains would like to join us please contact Jane Collier to book your place (email janecollier03@btinternet.com).
