Invitation to our members to join Essex Golf Captains on their Mini Break in 2024

Recently a decision was taken by the Essex Golf Club Captains Committee to reduce the number of their events in 2024 in order to try to maximise the number of attendees at each event. The knock on effect is that there will not be a Friendly match with us going forward. This is a real shame as our members have really enjoyed this event for many years.

However, an invitation has been extended to our members and their partners to join in their Mini Break.  This is wholly organised by the Essex Golf Club Captains and the contact for further information or to book is Peter Freeman email: peter.freeman@essexgolfclubcaptains.co.uk or Mob 07957 698557. I hope that some of you will find this offer attractive and will join the Men and their partners. Of course some of you may already have attended a Mini Break if your partner has been a Club Captain.    If so you might like to add a comment below for others to see. Please feel free to  share this information with other members of the Society. The details provided for the 2024 event are set out below:

2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast, 3 rounds of golf at Donnington Valley Hotel & GC near Newbury RG14 3AG from Sunday 21st July 2024.

4 ball better ball Sunday and Monday with Greensomes on the Tuesday, drawn in score order.

Tee times already booked.

There are prizes each day 1st & 2nd & 1st & 2nd overall, nearest the pins men and ladies each day. No pair can win more than 1 prize except nearest the pins.

Langdon Hills Autumn Meeting October 2023 – Results

Langdon Hills was the venue for the Society of Essex Lady Captains Autumn Meeting in early October. Following some last minute cancellations 44 ladies played a 4BBB Competition on the Langdon & Bulphan courses.

The courses were in good condition, though some ladies found the putting tricky. It was a warm day for October. Interestingly, the ‘hazards’ on the course did change throughout the day. See photos below of the Par 3 14th hole early in the day and then how different it looked when my group reached the hole later that day!

It was a fantastic day, both on and off the golf course, with a delicious and plentiful carvery and apple pie to follow the golf. Thanks to Langdon Hills for hosting our event and to all the staff on the day. Thanks also to Lady Captain Dot Archer for joining us on the day and to Colin Archer and Lady Vice Captain Susan Body for doing the results.
The Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy was presented to Louise Daniels (Boyce Hill) winner of the 2023 competition by Georgina Penketh Ida Bunting Organiser & Referee. The Entry Form for the 2024 knockout stage of the competition has been sent to all clubs and is downloadable from our Ida Bunting page.

The prizes for the Autumn Meeting were awarded as follows:

BB9 Liz Karn (Braintree) & Sue Hilton (Boyce Hill) 23 pts

BF9 Pat Flynn (The Rayleigh Club) & Mary Hull (Burnham) 24 pts ocb

3rd Kim Highfield (The Warren) & Lesley Knight (Colne Valley) 44 pts ocb

2nd Carole Lewis (Five Lakes) & Liz Tolhurst (Burnham) 47 pts

In 1st place and winners of the Bradban Trophy were:

Christine Barker (Rochford Hundred) & Jenny Luke (Mardyke Valley) with 48 pts

The Rayleigh Club 22 September 2023 – Results

In the penultimate meeting of the season, 36 ladies from 19 clubs across Essex played on the South Course at The Rayleigh Club. The reworked bunkers provided an additional challenge and the recent rainfall meant the ball wasn’t running quite as much. It turned out to be a beautiful day with impressive views from some of the high spots on the course. After the golf the ladies were treated to a delicious salmon or vegetarian meal followed by chocolate fudge cake.

Thanks to Past Lady Captain Jo Kurn for helping with final arrangements, hosting the day, helping to present the prizes and to Jo and Pat Flynn for doing the results. Thanks also to The Rayleigh Club for hosting the event and to all the staff on the day for looking after us so well. Special thanks to Jade at the Club for ensuring all our arrangements were in place for a very enjoyable day.

The prize winners were:

Best Back 9 Glynis Copplestone (Maylands) & Viggi Thompson (Forrester Park) 20 points

Best Front 9 Catherine Wilkins (Stock Brook) & Sofie Ahmed (Benton Hall) 21 points

3rd Amanda Mitchell (Crondon Park) & Liz Tolhurst (Burnham on Crouch) 38 points ocb

2nd Sandy Grant (Maldon) & Susan Wilson (Forrester Park) 38 points ocb

1st and winners of the Friendship Salver
Mel Lewis (Burnham on Crouch) & Lynn Anderson Colne Valley with a very impressive score of 43 points.
